"Best Of" what is the questionSongs that everyone knows the words to? Or the bands' favorites? Or the ones they think don't get enough attention?

It might be interesting for each of the guys to choose one of their favorites, and then fill in the rest with the popular stuff.

OKlooked through all the albums and singles on the site and I've made a list of 12 I think have to be on it in any order;

rise
revelate
fitzcarraldo
headlong (album version)
early bird
seven day mile
redcord
denounced
me and my boyfriend
Precarious Aiming
One irish rover
Turbit or early riser (but I'd prefer both!)

The band can pick the rest

*comes out of frames board retirement*Personally, I would think along Kez's lines.

It would be great if the best of was a 2 cd release. One cd, had 'the favourites' on it and the other would be a b-sides favourites. I would also like to see it come out in a 'delux' format, where you could get what essentially would be a box set that had the 2 cds, vinyl versions of the cds, as well as a dvd, with all the odds and ends put on it from over the years of recordings and maybe a nice book that would be in it too. Something that would encourage fans who already have all the music to actually go out and buy it.

Personally, I'd love to see, from the main album collection: The Dancer, Roger, Revelate, Fitzcarraldo, Say it to me now, Red chord, Seven Day Mile, Plateau, Star star**, Rent Day Blues, Lay Me Down, What Happens..., Early Bird, Santa Maria, Finally, Fake, A Caution.., People Get Ready, Rise, Bad Bone. I know that's more than 14, but any of those would be great to see.

As for b-sides, One Irish Rover (w. Liam O'Maonlai), Steal My Body Home, Look Back Now, Taking the hard Way Out, Tomorrow's too long, New Partner, Roads Outgrown, Waiting Room, Me & My Boyfriend, No More I love yous, oh there are more, but I can't think of many at the moment...

There you go *throws 2 cents in*

wow this is toughSo is it for the real fans of the band or for joe public if ye get me? and Is it a 'best of' or 'greatest hits'?

Nightmare! I can't figure a list out and I'm tryna be as objective as possible.

A best of, if aimed at the hardcore, should cover unreleased stuff like b-sides that aren't really available officially. A second disc would work wonders here.

A Greatest hits(for want of a better word) is a much easier prospect(and still not that easy) and really should just be all the bands singles collected, from The Dancer onwards.

Roads Outgrown, while fun, was a sort of very limited attempt at this, so maybe something along those lines but a lot lot more filled out?

Mission impossible..I can't make a list.

The second cd could be b-sides and stuff that's hard to get.

The question is:Who is this for?

If it is for the old fans that have stuck with the band for 20 years or is it for the newcomers who came onboard with the swell season?

If it is to serve both camps, it would have to be at least a 2-CD thing with one disc being rare, unreleased material. Otherwise, longtime fans will have no reason to buy it.

I would like to put in a request that it be expanded to include a DVD with some of the footage that has been piling up over the years. I think it would be really disappointing if all they do is a basic greatest hits type CD. It would be a very weak way to mark the anniversary.

so manyI think it'd be great to have a one-CD disc for everyone that sort of says, "We're back. Remember all of this?" and a two CD disc for the fans. If you wanted to tweak it to make it a bit different, take the tracks from disc one the band isn't happy with and give 'em a try with the current players. I think if the one-CD is for everyone, it's going to taper pretty close to Setlist (or with no restraint, a reissue of For the Birds. Damn, that's a fine album. Someone should tell them or something), so something should be done to make the tracks stand out.

Anyway- Disc one- no order, except for The Dancer and too many tracks, but whatever-

The Dancer
Revelate
Red Chord
Fitzer
Seven Day Mile
Pavement Tune
Star Star
Neeth the Beeches
Dance the Devil back into his hole
Lay Me Down
Heart Just Stops
Early Bird
Friends and Foe
Mighty Sword
Finally
Fake
Locusts
People Get Ready
Bad Bone

B-Sides-
Me and My Boyfriend
Sickbeds
Look Back Now
Hard Way Out
Teardrops in My Wine (kidding. or am I?)
Turbit
-and then maybe demo/alternate versions (like Pavement Tune here instead of the main disc, maybe?) of some tracks that didn't necessarily fit on disc 1, or that the band just really likes or personal favourites or covers that have significance (especially if they haven't already appeared as official releases)

But more than anything, what would be fantastic, especially for the fans? Live DVD. There's got to be enough footage to put something together, even if it's a well-thought out live best-of with footage of each track, music videos if they existed, etc.

And commentary, yes! If you want to keep it short just have Joe do it.

I likethe idea of a double CD with something to attract new fans and a B sides version to keep fans such as me who really do not know everything interested.

I think 'Best of ' albums work best as an introduction for people who may not know much about a band. I have a Leonard Cohen 'best of' which is quite beautifully put together, the songs all fit together like a jigsaw and explore a particular mood... better than other best ofs which are too populist.

definitely a deluxeversion with an extra disc of unreleased or if not possible, then of the brilliant b-sides. what about a couple of newly recorded songs hmmm!!!!??????? wonder if all recordings from previous bad record companies can be used, like the original tracks to go on als?

Yeah but no coslotta that stuffs there but it's not as if their masters and all that. Imagine getting a proper posh sounding Abyss or Bye Bouquet or Dancer? The ALS version is good but the original from the 7" single is just played better.

Spose they could go and just lash all those tracks down and knock em out, but that's really the realm of fantasy land right there.

I think the posh box available through the website a great idea and the regular one for the shops is the way to go. Everyones happy that way.

box setas an example of someone doing the box set sort of thing who doesn't have the resources of a pearl jam type band, mr. ritter re-released his albums and did 'deluxe' editions with the album, and then a disc of the album totally acoustic + some b-sides or live cuts. so it seems doable for someone in the frames position? he also did a really nice boxset for the new album but that was more about limited merch like tshirts/posters than new tunes. although i think the song book with lyrics/tab/music was a nice touch.

I have no idea what the margins are on something like that, but sure if it was done as a limited run with stuff fans would really like to have - recordings that never saw the light of day, footage that likewise has never seen the beautiful sun- they could do really well through the website. if such a box was done, it could be paired with a really nice retrospective booklet or something- like a condensed version of zoran's book.

My ChoiceI'm not a friend of Best Of CDs. A Best of is nothing for fans, as they already have all CDs. There is no point in buying a Best of for fans. It's just something for people who don't know the band and want to get into it or people who just like a few songs.

As a fan I would pefer a CD with new material, ideally a new studio recording or at least a CD of previously unreleased songs.

Anyway, if I had to chose songs for a Best Of recording it would include the following songs:

Revelate
Fitzcarraldo
Red Chord
Your Face
Seven Day Mile
Pavement Tune
Star Star
The Stars Are Underground
God Bless Mom
Lay Me Down
What Happens Wehen The Heart Just Stops
Santa Maria
Disappointed
Finally
A Caution To The Birds
Fake
Keepsake
Sad Songs

Live DVDAs The Frames for me are a typical live band,I would suggest a concert DVD. So far there hasn't been any official Frames dvd, at least I can't think of any.

Do a gig at Vicar Street with an Irish crowd singing along, film it and get it out on DVD.

Obviously no shortage of ideas, but...ok, limited to 14...

Unreleased B-Sides for people like us:
1. RACES!!! a proper studio version, please!
2. One Little Hopeful (see above)

Greatest Hits:
3. Revelate
4. Star Star**
5. Fake
6. Fitzcarraldo

Obscure/Old Songs for New Fans:
7. God Bless Mom (IATMH or Headlong EP version)
8. Red Chord
9. Plateau
10. Headlong
11. Pavement Tune
12. Stars Are Underground (IATMH version)

Best of the Newer Releases
13. Dream Awake
14. People All Get Ready

But I'd be all for a U2-style greatest hits with the singles on one disc and rarities on the other. Including anything and everything from the Molina sessions or any other FTB scraps you've got.

But my #1 wish (well, #2 after Races) would be a new recording of an old song or two featuring some Frames alumni (e.g. Odlum and Noreen). I know, I know, we're demanding fans

tuppence worth..i think there's two problems that are cropping up - how to keep the newer fans (let's say those that have arrived post swell season) as against those that have been around longer.

(cause lets face it, these audiences are probably the only two that'll buy this - those that bought enough of setlist/btm to allow the lads play marlay park will look at the tracklist and more than likely say to themselves, well most of these are on setlist, so i'm not going to buy it..but i digress...)

so, i think trig's idea of a website deluxe package for the hardcore people and a "normal" disc in the shops is the way to go (can i request unreleased albini stuff for that deluxe pacakage if it's done btw?!oh,and 15 seafort parade!)..

so, my 14 (which i would hope would keep interet flowing..everything except 1+14 interchangeable maybe)..

1.dancer
2.your face
3.fitz
4.pavement tune
5.monument
6.caution to the birds (not btm version!)
7.DtD
8.your face
9.what happens
10.revelate
11.seven day mile
12.early bird
13.people get ready
14.telegraph poles

or make the deluxe edition an individual release. similar to what Beck did, where everyone could design individual covers

My Ideal Playlist...1. Say it to Me Now
2. Lay Me down
3. People All Get Ready
4. Evergreen
5. Fitzcarraldo
6. Finally
7. Rise
8. When Your Minds Made Up
9. Headlong
10. Keepsake
11. What Happens When the Heart Just Stops
12. The Dancer
13. Denounced
14. Sad Songs

In o real particular order but these are the ones I find myself listening to the most. Live albums aside, that is. There are several songs that I don't care to listen to if it's not live. The studio version just doesn't capture the magic enough. Not that ANY studio version of a Frames song can completely capture the magic of a live show, it's just not possible.

EVERY. B-SIDE.Seriously! Plus, anything recorded with Steve Albini/BTM sessions. And, my 14 would be...

1. The Dancer
2. Picture of Love
3. Fitzcarraldo
4. Your Face
5. Pavement Tune
6. Star Star
7. Early Bird
8. Santa Maria
9. Fitzcarraldo (Breadcrumb Trail version)
10. Pavement Tune (Setlist version)
11. Finally
12. Underglass
13. Song For Someone
14. People Get Ready

Seriously, for the box set, they should just throw in recordings of EVERY SINGLE SONG THEY'VE EVER PLAYED. EVER. I'd sell a kidney to get that set, if needed.

Pluuuus...All the videos, all of Britness, if it exists, video of the Breadcrumb Trails gig, random great live footage, docu on the band through the years/interviews, etc. Plus, poster(s) tshirt(s, plus buying the limited edition gives a chance to meet the band or something similar.. Ahh, so many possibilities! I'd really love to see some of Glen's solo stuff, prior to TSS, but that would probably only appeal to the reall hardcore fans.. Or, to simplify it, re-issue For the Birds, with all related b-sides, plus some unreleased stuff from the same sessions.. Plus a commentary disc, maybe.. Well, so much for simplifying.. Can't wait for whatever it is the lads'll do! Above all, a new album, please!

deluxe...I will admit and say I skipped a bit on the way down and can see many others have suggested this sort of thing already but I think the Deluxe Collection is where anyone on this board and many others would be after in this. So you're 14 Track CD as per general 1 disc release but then a great package of other b-sides, stuff that has never seen light of day or odd outtakes and definitely a DVD, would be so great to get some fresh documentary footage. A bit of a to date, putting a marker in 2010 and moving on from here. May be do some small & intimate la blogotheque/bandwidth films performance. Come up to Belfast and I'll sort it out!

Some stunning imagery/prints in there too would be awesome. For my 14 Track, heavy hitters would be...

Perfect Opening Line
Seven Day Mile
Pavement Tune
Martha
Dream Awake
People Get Ready
Fitzcarraldo
Say It To Me Now
Lay Me Down
What Happens When the Heart Just Stops
Headlong
Rise
Santa Maria

I honestly do not think I would buy something which was just a jewel case CD with tracks I already owned, just to have all the CD's.

Any hints at any more shows?

Live DVD & Fitz Breadcrumb trailI can't make a list, that's too dificult. But if you really want to make fans happy...

release a live dvd! It's been said earlier here and I think it's the best way to get to know The Frames, to celebrate The Frames, to remember The Frames and to enjoy the Frames when you're already a fan. I'm addicted to the Fabchannel concerts of The Frames (2 actually, one of 2002(?) and one of 2006). But one of Vicar Street (old one is also great, if there's material) would even be better!

And if not, and if there's going to be a cd... at least put Fitzcarraldo (live, Breadcrumb trail) on it. It's the most beautiful version I can think of.

So...
Fitzcarraldo (live, Breadcrumb trail)
What happens
The Dancer (sweet NYE memories
Fake
Seven day mile

and then i'd better stop. Can't choose i think...

The Frames UnpluggedNo point in doing a straight best of with 14 tracks from any of the previously released albums / singles etc. Anyone with an ipod can replicate it with a playlist as I'm sure most people have already bought the back catalogue. I'd rather have a new album than pay for anything that I have previously bought. I'd like to see something completely new, be that a live DVD, or unreleased tracks, or a new album! Alternatively, if it had to be 14 songs from the previously released material then I'd like to see them re-recorded as new versions- perhaps a kind of the frames unplugged CD and DVD or something in a similar vein to the MTV unplugged sessions like pearl Jam, Nirvana did in the 90s. Now that I'd queue at midnight for!! Best of luck with it anyway.

Gift boxIf you do a gift box set and if Lay me DOwn makes the album cut, then you could add in a cloth mask. Whenever I bring mine to a gig, people always ask where I got it so I'm sure it'd encourage sales! Also helps identify fellow Frames fans at festivals. Not that The Frames are doing much of that at present.
